Using
mIRC With The
Proxy Connection Servers
SOCKS
5 And Sockscap Proxy Settings
Proxy
Server addresses and ports used for SOCKS 5 or Sockscap can be found on
our
Proxy Server List. The
port to use for each server will be listed on the same line as the server name.
If your are having problems with your ISP being able to look up the server name,
you can use the IP address in place of the server name. If you still experience
problems, check your configuration and be sure that you are using the correct
user name and password. If you have checked everything, try a different proxy
server on one of our other networks just in case we are having problems. If after
trying both networks and you are still having problems, contact our technical
support department. During normal business hours you can telephone support 603-740-5666
(normal business hours are Monday - Friday, 9:30 AM until 5:00 PM E.S.T.) Email
support is provided 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.
Setting
Up Your mIRC
You
will need an account with The Proxy Connection before using our proxy servers.
To get total access to all of the Proxy Connection services and access to hundreds
of proxy servers click
here to sign up. The cost is only $24.95 per month.
Step
#1 Select Which Proxy You
Would Like To Use
Before
we get started you will need to select which proxy server from our list that you
would like to use. All that you will need to start is an IP address and the SOCKS
port for that IP. As shown below each proxy server has a socks port and IP address
listed for each. You can view the complete real list by clicking HERE
or visiting http://theproxyconnection.com/httplist.html

For
this lesson we have chosen DSL-NET.ORG as our proxy server.

Step
#2 Configure mIRC To Use
The Proxy Server
Start
configuring mIRC by opening the program. Now click on File and select Options.
You
will see a window like the one below (different versions may vary depending on
newer/older options)

With many IRC servers, the email name that you select in this window will control
what user name that you are showing up as when users are using whois on you. In
this case ie@me.com will display "ie" as the logon name on some IRC
servers. Other servers will take the name from the IDENT configuration, while
others may display the proxy user name that we assigned to you. You may need to
try different servers to get your desired result.
Step
#3 mIRC Options
Click
on the Options tab and configure your options. Place a check in Local Host and
make sure that the radio button has the Server option selected as shown below.
If you are having any problems you can come back to this window and change the
settings, but if they do not fix your problem be sure to come back and change
the settings back to those shown in this lesson.
NOTE: If you are trying
different settings you may find that you need to close and then restart mIRC between
your changes to get true results.

Step
#4 Enable The Ident Server
The
Ident server is required on some IRC servers. If you do not have it enabled, you
can leave it off and come back later if you are having problems connecting or
changing your user name.

Step
#5 Configure The mIRC Proxy
Firewall
Using SOCKS 5
For
this lesson we have chosen DSL-NET.ORG as our proxy server and have entered it
into the firewall settings as shown below.
You can enter the host name
DSL-NET.ORG or the IP address 63.127.192.136. The port for this server is the
standard socks port 1080. Be sure to enter the correct user name and password
that we sent to you in email when you signed up for our service.
NOTE:
If you are using Dal.net or another server that requires IDENT,
you will need to use one of our proxy servers that include IDENT to be able to
connect these IRC servers. All of the proxy servers on Machine # 4, Machine #
5, Machine # 6 and Machine # 7 use the IDENT service.

Note:
If you have an old LDproxy account you can use any of the services
or proxy virtuals listed for Machine #3, #4 and #5. If you would like to upgrade
to a Proxy Connection account and access all of the servers listed you can do
so HERE
(be sure to add your old proxy user name in the notes section with the word upgrade)
You
are now finished - Restart your mIRC program and connect to a server.
After
connecting to a server, do a /whois on your nick name and you should see that
your real information is now hidden and you are coming from the new proxy address
as shown below.

Changing
The Server
Changing
the server is easy, simply select another server;

Change
the server address and port in your mIRC firewall options area;

And
restart mIRC and connect to the server! You will now see that you are coming from
the new proxy address as shown below.

SOCKS
5 And Sockscap Support
If you have problems that you can not over come
use sockscap. Sockscap is a freeware program put out by NEC. Many people like
using sockscap when they have many different Internet programs because once sockscap
is configured for the proxy server, you do not need to configure any of your Internet
programs. Simply click and drag your Internet programs into the sockscap program
control window, start the program, and you are running on the proxy! It is this
easy. Full instructions for downloading and setting up sockscap can be found here.
mIRC Version 6.01 was used for this lesson.
The latest version of mIRC can always be downloaded from http://www.mirc.com/
