SOCKS
5 And Sockscap Proxy Settings
Proxy
Server addresses and ports used for SOCKS 5 or Sockscap can be found on
our
Proxy Server List. The
port to use for each server will be listed on the same line as the server name.
If your are having problems with your ISP being able to look up the server name,
you can use the IP address in place of the server name. If you still experience
problems, check your configuration and be sure that you are using the correct
user name and password. If you have checked everything, try a different proxy
server on one of our other networks just in case we are having problems. If after
trying both networks and you are still having problems, contact our technical
support department. During normal business hours you can telephone support 603-740-5666
(normal business hours are Monday - Friday, 9:30 AM until 5:00 PM E.S.T.) Email
support is provided 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.
Setting Up
ICQ For The Proxy
You
will need an account with The Proxy Connection before using our proxy servers.
To get total access to all of the Proxy Connection services and access to hundreds
of proxy servers click
here to sign up. The cost is only $24.95 per month.
Step
#1 Select Which Proxy You
Would Like To Use
Before
we get started you will need to select which proxy server from our list that you
would like to use. All that you will need to start is an IP address and the SOCKS
port for that IP. As shown below each proxy server has a socks port and IP address
listed for each. You can view the complete real list by clicking HERE
or visiting http://theproxyconnection.com/httplist.html

For
this lesson we have chosen DSL-NET.ORG as our proxy server.

Step
#2 Configure ICQ To Use
The Proxy Server
Start
configuring ICQ by opening the program. Click on the "Main" button and
select "Preferences" and then choose "Connections". You will
see a window like the one below (different versions may vary depending on newer/older
options)
Make the selections as shown above "Using Firewall" "Using Proxy"
and select "Socks 5" in the pull down Proxy select window. You may also
want to check the "Keep connection alive" check box.
Step
#3 Configure The ICQ Proxy
Firewall
Using SOCKS 5
For
this lesson we have chosen DSL-NET.ORG as our proxy server and have entered it
into the firewall settings as shown below.
You can enter the host name
DSL-NET.ORG or the IP address 63.127.192.136. The port for this server is the
standard socks port 1080. Be sure to enter the correct user name and password
that we sent to you in email when you signed up for our service.

Step
#4 ICQ User Tab
Click on the User tab and select "Use server settings".

Note:
If you have an old LDproxy account you can use any of the services
or proxy virtuals listed for Machine #3, #4 and #5. If you would like to upgrade
to a Proxy Connection account and access all of the servers listed you can do
so HERE
(be sure to add your old proxy user name in the notes section with the word upgrade)
You are now finished - Restart your ICQ and
connect.
Changing
The Server
Changing
the server is easy, simply repeat step #3 using a new proxy server and restart
ICQ.
SOCKS
5 And Sockscap Support
If you have problems that you can not over come
use sockscap. Sockscap is a freeware program put out by NEC. Many people like
using sockscap when they have many different Internet programs because once sockscap
is configured for the proxy server, you do not need to configure any of your Internet
programs. Simply click and drag your Internet programs into the sockscap program
control window, start the program, and you are running on the proxy! It is this
easy. Full instructions for downloading and setting up sockscap can be found here.
ICQ Version 2002a was used for this lesson.
The latest version of ICQ can always be downloaded from http://www.icq.com/download/
